Kunstkamp Organizes a Meet-Up through DiscoverEU

Twice a year, the European Commission runs a large competition where everyone who turns 18 that year can win a free Interrail ticket to travel around Europe. The scheme is called DiscoverEU, and since 2022 it has been part of the Erasmus+ programme. This means that Norway, as a member of Erasmus+, can also participate. Hooray!

Each year, there are around 70,000 tickets available, with approximately 800 of them going to young people in Norway. Each country receives a quota of tickets based on its population. The competition is simple: you register (either individually or with friends), answer a few multiple-choice questions and one guess question, and those who guess closest win a ticket. The ticket is valid for 15 months, and you can travel whenever you want within that period. The trip can last up to 30 days, and you can visit as many countries as you like. What is a “meet-up”?

Those who win a ticket have the opportunity to register for meet-ups across Europe. These are events where DiscoverEU-traveling young people can meet each other, learn a bit about the country or place they’ve arrived in, and perhaps get the chance to connect with local youth.

A meet-up can take many forms—the main goal is to facilitate meetings between young people and help them get to know each other across borders. Meet-ups can last anywhere from one hour to three days, and can be organized as a standalone event or in connection with an existing programme.

In Norway, the Norwegian Directorate for Children, Youth and Family Affairs (Bufdir) administers the youth sector of the Erasmus+ programme, including DiscoverEU. There are dedicated project funds available to organize meet-ups for young people visiting Norway on Interrail.
